The Silent Struggle: Uncovering Why Disabled Students in Kasese Are Left Behind

On June 26th, I had the honor of hosting the premiere of “The Silent Struggle for Disabled Students in Kasese”—a documentary I personally directed and produced, and privately sponsored. This film was brought to life in partnership with Innovation Media Uganda, who helped me capture, shape and edit this powerful story.

The event was graced by an inspiring mix of local government leaders, school heads, NGO representatives, media professionals, friends, and family. Their presence made the experience deeply meaningful.

A few months ago, I felt a strong urge to tell a story, not just my own, which I’ve shared through articles and reflections, but the collective story of disabled students who silently battle systemic exclusion throughout their school journey. That desire to shift the narrative is what gave birth to this documentary.

In Kasese, my home district known for its hilly terrain, disabled students continue to face steep emotional, physical, and institutional challenges from accessing secondary education to making it into universities, and eventually finding employment. The documentary seeks to investigate why their numbers continue to decline as they rise through the education system.

During the screening, the room grew heavy. I saw eyes filled with tears, and people deeply moved by the realities I’ve grown used to. It was emotional for me and for everyone who watched.

We followed the screening with a powerful panel discussion featuring the Kasese Town Clerk, the District Special Needs Officer, a disabled graduate, and a head teacher of an inclusive school. Their insights added weight and urgency to the message.

What made it even more special? The event happened on my birthday, turning what was intended to be a documentary premiere into an unforgettable celebration of inclusion, storytelling, and purpose.

This was the first event of its kind in the district, individually sponsored, personally driven, and supported by high-level local leaders.

I’m truly grateful for the love, encouragement, and powerful memories created on this day. Let’s keep pushing for systems that include, not exclude.
