Completing the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Center (RLC) East Africa program in Nairobi was a transformative and enriching experience. This journey equipped me with a wealth of skills, knowledge, and attitudes that I am eager to bring back to my community to drive positive change.
Week One: Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity

The first week was all about orientation and team-building activities, with a significant focus on diversity, equality, and inclusion. We learned how to live harmoniously with people from different cultures, colors, backgrounds, and abilities. This foundational lecture was crucial in creating a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, especially for young people living with disabilities like myself. The warm welcome I received upon arrival made me feel at home immediately. It was my first visit to a neighboring country and my first university experience after high school, having previously studied online due to certain circumstances. This initial week set a positive tone for the rest of the program.
Week Two: Deepening Knowledge and Connections

The second week was packed with love, vibrant interactions, and intensive learning. We delved into design thinking, reviewed Stephen Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," and explored Pan-Africanism through the "This is Africa" series. Practical activities complemented these lessons, allowing us to apply what we learned in real-world scenarios. Being surrounded by like-minded youths from East and Central Africa, all passionate about making a difference, was incredibly motivating. As an introvert, this environment challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace collaboration and networking, which was pivotal for my personal growth.
Week Three: Engaging in Community Service and Cultural Immersion

The third week was both educational and action-packed. We refined our design challenges in preparation for our final project pitches, thanks to the endless support from mentors like James and Nzilna. The weekend was particularly memorable: we visited Wingfarm to see the impressive work of YALI alumni, inspiring us to envision the impact we could make. On Saturday, we traveled to Enoomatasiani Mixed Day High School for community service, mentoring students and planting trees as a climate action initiative. Sunday was spent at Bomas of Kenya, where we immersed ourselves in cultural performances and music, deepening our appreciation for Kenya's rich heritage.
Final Week: Culmination and Farewells

The final week was a whirlwind of activity and emotion. We spent time rephrasing our design challenges and preparing for the final pitch, the program's culminating activity. Pitching our projects was exhilarating, showcasing the hard work and innovative thinking we had developed. Commencement day was a momentous occasion where we were awarded our certificates. I was honored with the title "Self Proclaimed King of Cohort 55, Kenyatta University Conference Center (KUCC)," a light-hearted but meaningful recognition from my peers.
The week also featured insightful lectures from esteemed speakers such as Dr. Linda Kimenucu, Faustina Ning'a, Tom Mboya Opyio, and Samuel Murage. Their teachings further enriched our understanding and prepared us for the challenges ahead. Saying goodbye to my colleagues was bittersweet, as we had formed deep bonds over the weeks. Yet, the camaraderie and shared experiences created a network of support and inspiration that will continue beyond the program.
Gratitude and Moving Forward

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with immense gratitude for the individuals who made my stay in Kenya remarkable. Mama Julie’s warm welcome and endless support made me feel at home from the moment I arrived. Wawere, my dedicated driver, shared invaluable wisdom during our travels, enriching my experience. Dr. Jane’s compassionate leadership and dedication to young leaders with disabilities were truly inspiring. Additionally, my personal assistant and fellow Cohort 55 participants provided unwavering support and camaraderie.
Armed with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes gained from YALI RLC EA, I am ready to impact my community positively. From promoting inclusivity and sustainability to fostering leadership and Pan-African collaboration, I am committed to driving meaningful change. The journey was unforgettable, and I am excited to apply what I have learned to contribute to a brighter future.
