In the past week, I had the privilege of participating in a remarkable endeavor alongside my colleagues. We convened in Mbale and Gulu, respectively, to meticulously review and evaluate proposals for Amaani Fund applicants from Eastern and Northern Uganda. This marked my inaugural foray into panel interviews and scoring processes, and it proved to be an immensely enriching experience.
Witnessing passionate young individuals living with disabilities articulately defend their proposals was both inspiring and humbling. Their determination to captivate the hearts of the panelists amidst various challenges, be it in writing or verbal presentation, left an indelible mark on me. I found myself torn between extending an empathetic vote and adhering strictly to the predefined criteria—a dilemma that resonated deeply with me.
Moreover, the friendly nature among the panelists added an extra layer of joy to our collective journey. As someone who communicates non-verbally, my role in the discussions was to express myself through laughter, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion within the funny conversations.
Furthermore, this endeavor afforded me the opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant sights and sounds of Northern and Eastern Uganda, a region brimming with cultural richness and untapped potential.
Amaani Fund, a participatory grant-making project implemented by Show Abilities Uganda SAU and funded by the Fund for Global Human Rights, embodies the ethos of empowering marginalized communities and fostering inclusivity.
As we eagerly await the announcement of the selected group for this pilot project, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact of this experience. It has not only deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities but also reinforced my belief in the power of collective action to effect meaningful change.
In the days to come, I look forward to witnessing the transformative impact of Amaani Fund on the lives of those it seeks to empower. Together, let us continue to champion inclusivity and equity.
